What is Thai Massage?

Thai Traditional Massage is based upon the belief that good health and freedom from pain result from the unhindered flow of vital energies through the body's tissues. The pathways of this energy flow are called 'Sen' in the Thai language and the Massage Practitioner aims to stimulate energy flow through the many Sen in the body by applying gentle to medium pressure to these various Sen channels. The Practitioner applies this pressure by the use of thumbs, palms, forearms, elbows, feet and even knees depending on the depth and severity of the blockage

Each Sen channel is pressed repeatedly from every direction, with the relative positions of the limbs and trunk being constantly changed. The process is very thorough. When the practitioner is satisfied that all soft tissues have been adequately pressed, stretching begins.

This will be subtle at first but gradually progresses to the elegant, large scale stretches for which Thai massage is renowned. Every muscle and joint is treated.

How long does a typical Thai Massage last?

A Thai Massage typically lasts for one hour according to the severity and nature of the ailment presented. A shorter or longer time may be appropriate depending on each individual case.

How does it feel?

Nothing is hurried; there are no sudden changes of rhythm or speed. Every technique melts into the next with a total economy of motion.

First time recipients of the massage react differently; some find the pressing techniques - particularly those done with the thumb - a little uncomfortable. If this is the case, the Practitioner will reduce the pressure to lessen the impact. However many are surprised at the degree of stretching their stiff body can achieve after just one visit.

Almost all feel relaxed, refreshed and much more flexible afterwards.
